About
Victor Peter Chang was a Chinese–Australian cardiac surgeon recognized as a pioneer of modern heart transplantation in Australia. Educated at the University of Sydney with further training in the United Kingdom and the United States, he led the transplant unit at St Vincent’s Hospital, which became a national benchmark for its high success rates and for pioneering pediatric and heart–lung procedures.
Chang also led efforts to develop affordable heart valves and artificial heart technologies, founding industrial initiatives and international partnerships to manufacture prostheses widely used in Asia. His work combined clinical surgery, applied research and institutional coordination to address the shortage of donors.
In addition to medical recognition, he was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia in 1986 for his contributions to medicine and to Australia–China relations. His violent death in 1991 caused widespread public shock; his legacy includes the foundation bearing his name and the cardiac research institute established in his memory, which continue to influence Australian cardiology.
