About

William Vincent Astor was an American businessman and philanthropist, heir to the influential Astor family. He inherited one of the largest fortunes of his time after his father’s death on the Titanic and became owner of enterprises such as Newsweek, of which he was the principal shareholder and chairman for decades. Known for interests in transportation and yachting, he maintained notable properties such as the large Ferncliff estate in Rhinebeck and a private railway complex in Bermuda.

Unlike earlier family members, he built a more socially engaged public image: he sold dilapidated family-owned properties and directed investments toward more receptive ventures, as well as funded community projects in New York, including housing complexes and children’s playgrounds in the Bronx and Harlem. Together with his third wife, he developed the Vincent Astor Foundation, focused on urban projects for the city.

He also had a military role: he served in the Naval Reserve and was called up in both world wars, holding command positions and taking part in escort and naval operations. His legacy combines economic power, urban philanthropic initiatives, and an effort to renew the family’s public image.
