About

Vincenzo Bellini was a 19th-century Italian composer, regarded as one of the great opera composers of his era. Born in Catania, Sicily, he received early musical training and produced works that include sacred music, chamber pieces, and orchestral compositions, though his reputation rests chiefly on his operas.

His principal contribution to the repertoire was the refinement of lyrical bel canto, emphasizing vocal expression, agility, and precision, and seeking a smoother integration of arias and recitatives without losing dramatic intensity. Among his best-known operas are La sonnambula, Norma, and I Puritani, works that have remained in the repertoire and influenced generations of singers.

Norma, in particular, contains the aria “Casta Diva,” a symbol of the balance between classical gravity and Romantic sensitivity, and became a central role for 20th-century sopranos, interpreted by artists such as Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, and Montserrat Caballé. Bellini died in 1835 in Puteaux, near Paris; his legacy endures through the continued performance of his works in concert halls and the specialized discography.
