Violette Morris was a prominent French athlete in the 1920s and 1930s, known for extraordinary versatility: she competed in and won events in football, athletics (discus and shot put), motor racing, cycling, swimming, boxing and other disciplines. Between 1921 and 1924 she collected titles at the Women's World Games and the Women's Olympics, becoming publicly known for her slogan “Ce qu'un homme fait, Violette peut le faire!”. Her sporting career coincided with the rise of women’s sport in France and with social debates about gender roles.

Morris broke the social norms of her time—she had relationships with women, dressed in men’s clothing and led an unconventional lifestyle—which brought her into conflict with sporting institutions. In 1928 the French women's federation revoked her license for “moral offenses,” a sanction that also affected her motor racing activities and ended her professional competitive career.

In subsequent years her business and automotive projects did not prosper; she nevertheless maintained a social presence among artists and intellectuals, keeping ties with figures such as Jean Cocteau and Josephine Baker. During World War II she became involved with the collaborationist regime, a fact that severely tarnished her reputation. She was killed in 1944 in circumstances linked to the French Resistance; her legacy remains controversial: she is remembered both for pioneering sporting achievements and for the political collaboration that stained her life.
