About
Vita Sackville-West was a central figure in twentieth-century English literature and horticulture. A prolific writer, she became known as a poet and novelist — the long narrative poem The Land won the Hawthornden Prize in 1927, and her Collected Poems won the same prize again in 1933, making her the only person to receive it twice. Her output also includes novels and essays that reached a wide readership in their day.
Beyond her literary work, Vita gained international renown for the gardens at Sissinghurst in Kent, whose design and planting became a touchstone for British gardening; from 1946 she wrote a weekly column in The Observer that influenced gardeners’ practices and tastes. The creation of Sissinghurst secured her reputation as a garden maker and helped preserve the site as a cultural landmark.
Born into the aristocracy, she led a private life marked by an open marriage to Harold Nicolson and by passionate relationships with several writers and figures of her time, including Virginia Woolf — whose work Orlando was inspired by that relationship. Her combination of writing, cultural engagement, and aesthetic sensitivity made her a lasting presence on the English artistic and social scene.
