About
Walter Gropius was a German architect whose work helped shape modernism in the twentieth century. Trained under the influence of Peter Behrens, he first attracted attention with industrial projects such as the Fagus Factory (1911), where he used an independent structural frame, glass facades and pure volumes—features that would characterize his later work.
In 1919 he transformed the Weimar School of Applied Arts into the Staatliche Bauhaus, an institution that unified applied arts and fine arts and introduced an integrated pedagogical method. Under his leadership the Bauhaus brought together figures such as Kandinsky, Klee, Moholy-Nagy and Josef Albers and laid the foundations of modern design and functionalism, with a strong emphasis on the relationship between form and function.
Facing persecution as the Nazis rose to power, he emigrated to the United States in the 1930s and, beginning in 1937, took the chair of architecture at Harvard. There he developed much of his later work, collaborating with former Bauhaus students and contributing to typologies such as the modern skyscraper.
His legacy lies in the institutionalization of modern design, in training multidisciplinary professionals, and in his lasting influence on architecture, education and design industry.
