About

Washington Irving was an American writer, essayist, biographer, historian and diplomat active in the early 19th century. He gained international fame with The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent (1819), which includes the celebrated short stories "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle," works that capture the folklore and landscapes of the Hudson Valley with lyricism and humor.

In addition to fiction, Irving produced significant historical and biographical works, including an extensive five-volume biography of George Washington, completed shortly before his death. He also wrote about figures such as Oliver Goldsmith and Muhammad, and about episodes of 16th-century Spain, notably in The Alhambra.

He was one of the first American authors to gain recognition in Europe and influenced later generations of U.S. writers, arguing for writing as a legitimate profession and for stronger copyright protection. From 1842 to 1846 he served as the United States' diplomatic representative in Spain.

His literary legacy combines interest in the past, narrative skill and the promotion of American literature on the international stage, establishing him as a central figure in 19th-century American literary culture.
