About

Wes Craven was an American filmmaker and screenwriter recognized as one of the masters of horror cinema. Over a prolific career, he became especially known for work in the slasher subgenre, blending horror clichés with humor and metafictional elements. His name became synonymous with franchises and characters that defined generations.

Craven created A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), a film that launched a series of sequels and cemented his reputation by exploring the fear of dreams. He also directed the first four films of the Scream franchise (1996–2011), which revitalized horror in the 1990s by playing with the genre’s conventions.

Beyond those franchises, he directed cult classics such as The Last House on the Left (1972) and The Hills Have Eyes (1977), as well as a range of films including The People Under the Stairs (1991), The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988) and the drama Music of the Heart (1999). He received awards and honors throughout his career, including recognition for his body of work in the horror genre.

His legacy remains evident in his influence on horror filmmakers, in the creation of genre icons, and in his ability to move between shock, humor and social commentary in films that continue to engage contemporary audiences.
