About

Wes Montgomery was an American jazz guitarist whose technique and sound left a lasting mark on twentieth-century instrumental music. Known for plucking with the side of his thumb and for extensive use of octaves, Montgomery developed an unmistakable tone that influenced generations of guitarists and helped bring the guitar to a leading role in modern jazz.

He performed in hard bop, soul jazz and post-bop lineups as well as in more commercial recordings from the mid-1960s, when he recorded instrumental albums with pop appeal that broadened his audience. His earlier output, however, includes landmark works of the jazz circuit, such as trio recordings and collaborations with prominent musicians that affirmed his improvisational skill and harmonic sensitivity.

Born in Indianapolis, Montgomery maintained a life of hard work to support his family, combining manual jobs with long nights in clubs until he reached national recognition. Collaborations and residencies with important artists and bands paved the way for record contracts and for decisive recordings that consolidated his reputation.

His artistic legacy resonates in both traditional jazz and later strands such as jazz fusion and smooth jazz, through the technical and aesthetic influence he exerted on subsequent performers.
