About

Wilhelm Furtwängler was a German conductor and composer, considered one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century. He was chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra during the Nazi period in Germany.

Furtwängler also appeared several times as a conductor outside Germany. He made his London debut in 1924, and continued to perform there until 1938, when he conducted Wagner's Ring Cycle. In 1925 he appeared as a guest conductor with the New York Philharmonic and returned to the city in the two following years.

He resumed performing and recording after the end of the war and remained a popular conductor in Europe, although a shadow always hung over him because of accusations of involvement with Nazism; he was acquitted of all these charges.
