About

William Butler Yeats was a poet, playwright, and a central figure of the Irish Literary Revival. A co-founder of the Abbey Theatre, his early works are notable for imagery drawn from folklore and Celtic mysticism, as in The Celtic Twilight and The Wanderings of Oisin, reflecting Pre-Raphaelite influences and those of Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Over his career his poetry developed into a more austere, modern style, a process shaped by his associations with modernist poets such as Ezra Pound and by his involvement in the Irish nationalist movement. That transition broadened his reach and established him as a literary voice of Irish identity.

Beyond his literary work, Yeats served in public life as an Irish senator, a position he approached with seriousness and commitment. In 1923 he received the Nobel Prize in Literature, recognized for his ability to express the spirit of a nation through his poetry.

His legacy endures in modern literature and Irish theatre, influencing subsequent generations and remaining relevant to studies of poetry, symbolism, and Irish cultural identity.
