About

Yvette Guilbert was a French cabaret singer and actress, an emblematic figure of the Belle Époque. Discovered in Paris while still young, she transformed the café-concert repertoire by imposing a declamatory style of delivery — the “diseuse” — performing often audacious songs about love, tragedy and popular life, and creating a stage persona defined by long gloves and an elegant stillness.

Her appearances at the Moulin Rouge and Les Ambassadeurs changed the rules of popular entertainment: silent and focused, she encouraged a more serious appreciation of song. Between the late 19th and early 20th centuries she won international recognition, touring England, Germany and the United States and even performing at Carnegie Hall.

Notable artists and intellectuals — including Toulouse-Lautrec, who painted her repeatedly, and Sigmund Freud, who admired her — emphasized her singularity. She recorded hits such as “Le Fiacre” as well as her own compositions, and acted in both silent and sound films, retaining prestige into middle age.

In later life she turned to writing about her era, publishing novels that reflect the world she helped personify.
