About
Zachary Cole Smith is an American musician best known for founding and leading the indie rock band DIIV, where he serves as vocalist and principal songwriter. Born from a solo project originally called Dive, the band debuted with the album Oshin (2012), which blends influences from krautrock, post-punk and shoegaze; later releases include Is the Is Are (2016), Deceiver (2019) and Frog in Boiling Water (2024).
Before forming his own band, Smith was part of New York’s indie scene in groups such as Soft Black and Beach Fossils, and he toured with Darwin Deez. Alongside his music career, he has directed music videos for DIIV and singer Sky Ferreira, and has worked in fashion, modeling and walking shows for Saint Laurent.
His repertoire and aesthetic draw explicit references from German experimental rock bands and artists like Nirvana and Elliott Smith, influences that shape both DIIV’s sound and its visual output. Personal struggles with addiction led to publicly disclosed treatment and have marked part of the artist’s public life.
