About
Zarah Leander, born Sara Stina Hedberg, was a Swedish actress and singer prominent in the 1930s and 1940s, whose greatest success came in German-speaking countries and in Scandinavia. Trained in piano, violin and voice, she began her professional career in the late 1920s and soon moved into film and operetta, which launched her international career.
Signed by the German film industry, she became a star of UFA, often playing femme fatale roles and building a diva image that associated her in the public imagination with figures such as Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo. Her melodious voice and husky timbre contributed to her wide popularity with German audiences in the years before and during the Second World War.
With the decline of film production in Germany, she returned to Sweden in 1943, where she continued to work artistically although she did not regain the same level of fame. Over her career she recorded songs and appeared in films across several European countries, leaving a legacy as a notable interpreter of popular and film repertory from the 1930s to the 1950s.
