About

Franz Joseph Maximilian, 7th Prince of Lobkowitz, was a Bohemian aristocrat and a central figure in Viennese musical patronage at the turn of the 18th to 19th century. An officer in the Austrian army with the rank of Generalmajor, he is best known for his financial and institutional support of composers such as Josef Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven, to whom important works were dedicated. Dedications he received include several of Haydn’s quartets and, from Beethoven, the six Op. 18 quartets, as well as symphonies and cycles of lieder that helped shape the classical–romantic repertoire.

As a cultural host he created a notable concert hall in his palace and organized musical salons that encouraged meetings and artistic contests — one famous episode involved a rivalry between Beethoven and the pianist Daniel Steibelt. His patronage also included a lifelong pension contract signed in 1809 that provided Beethoven with financial security during decisive years of his career.

Lobkowitz’s public career and prestige were damaged by Austria’s post-Wagram economic crisis, which forced him to leave Vienna. Nevertheless, his legacy remains tied to the flourishing of chamber and symphonic music of the period through his direct support of composers and the preservation of performance spaces and cultural circulation.
