About
Abimael Guzmán (Manuel Rubén Abimael Guzmán Reynoso) was a Peruvian philosopher and revolutionary leader, known by the nom de guerre Presidente Gonzalo. A professor at the National University of San Cristóbal de Huamanga, he organized and led the Communist Party of Peru – Shining Path, formulating the so-called “Gonzalo Thought,” an adaptation of Marxism-Leninism-Maoism to Peruvian conditions. Under his leadership, the group launched a “people’s war” against the Peruvian state in 1980, seeking a peasant revolution inspired by the Maoist model.
Guzmán attracted followers among academics and radical sectors during the 1970s and 1980s, building an organization that adopted violent tactics and was widely criticized for attacks on peasants, union leaders, and elected officials. Those actions led several governments and international bodies to designate Shining Path as a terrorist organization.
Captured in 1992, Guzmán was tried and sentenced to life imprisonment in proceedings that stretched over years, including additional convictions related to high-impact attacks. Held at the Callao Naval Base, he remained a central figure in debates over political violence, insurgency, and their social and institutional consequences in Peru.
Beyond his political-military activity, Guzmán produced a body of theoretical work—essays and texts on Marxism, ideological critique, and revolutionary strategy—in which he developed criticisms of communist currents he regarded as revisionist.
