About
Alasdair Gray was a Scottish writer, artist and illustrator whose work shaped contemporary Scottish literature and culture. He became widely known for the novel Lanark (1981), written over nearly three decades and regarded as a modern classic; critics and writers cited it as a landmark of twentieth‑century fiction. In addition to novels, Gray produced short stories, plays, political essays and an autobiography, often illustrating his own volumes and experimenting with typography and graphic layout.
His work mixes realism, fantasy and science fiction, drawing on personal experience — such as his childhood in Glasgow and education in public schools — and a sustained interest in social and historical themes. He received major awards, including the Whitbread Novel Award and the Guardian Fiction Prize for Poor Things (1992).
A cultural activist, he described himself as a civic nationalist and a supporter of socialism and Scottish independence, positions that also informed his essays and public interventions. As an artist he left murals and permanent paintings in Glasgow and influenced generations of Scottish writers and artists. He died on 29 December 2019.
