About

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, known as AOC, is a U.S. representative, activist, and community organizer who rose to prominence by challenging the Democratic Party establishment. Born to a Puerto Rican family in the Bronx, she graduated in international relations and economics from Boston University and worked as a waitress before entering politics; that experience shaped her advocacy for working-class people.

In 2018 she unexpectedly won the Democratic primary in New York’s 14th District by defeating the then-powerful Joseph Crowley, running a low-budget campaign funded by small donations and focused on racial minorities and Latino communities. Describing herself as a democratic socialist, she joined and collaborated with progressive groups and supported Bernie Sanders’s 2016 primary campaign.

In Congress, Ocasio-Cortez has promoted a progressive agenda centered on universal healthcare, strengthened labor rights, parental leave, expanded access to education, and a Green New Deal for an energy transition; she also advocates for more humane immigration oversight and reforms to immigration policy. Her public role and combative style have made her a central figure in debates over renewal and polarization within the Democratic Party.
