About

Alfonso of Bourbon was Prince of Asturias and the apparent heir to the Spanish throne from his birth until the fall of the monarchy in 1931. The eldest son of Alfonso XIII and Princess Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, he represented the direct dynastic line during a period of intense political crisis that culminated in the proclamation of the Second Republic and the royal family's exile.

After the monarchical overthrow he maintained his claims to the title until 1933, when he renounced his dynastic rights to marry Edelmira Sampedro y Robato; from that union he also received, in 1933, the title Count of Covadonga, which he used while in exile. He married again in 1937 to Marta Rocafort; that relationship ended in divorce the following year.

A carrier of hemophilia through his mother, Alfonso's life was marked by personal and dynastic issues amid Spain's historical transition. He died in 1938 as the result of a car accident, and his remains were later transferred to the Pantheon of the Princes at El Escorial. During his lifetime he received honors such as the Order of the Golden Fleece and the Order of Charles III.
