About

Alfonso X, known as the Wise, was king of Castile, León and Galicia (1252–1284) and one of the most prominent political and cultural figures of the high medieval Iberian Peninsula. In addition to military campaigns against Muslim states and a war with Portugal, his foreign policy included claims to the German imperial throne—an ambition that consumed resources and shaped much of his diplomacy.

A patron of letters and the sciences, he sponsored major astronomical and historical projects—including the Alfonsine Tables—and promoted chroniclers who placed the Iberian Peninsula within a broader framework of universal history. As a legislator, he left the lasting imprint of the Siete Partidas, an effort to systematize law in the vernacular.

Economically, he established the Mesta, an association of sheep breeders that influenced the rural economy, but the need for revenue led him to controversial monetary policies that alienated both urban and rural populations. The end of his reign was marked by dynastic conflict: a dispute with his son Sancho and a civil war that weakened royal authority and left a troubled political legacy.
