About

Alfred Kubin was an Austrian expressionist illustrator and printmaker, and an occasional prose author, whose work is noted for its dark, dreamlike imagery. Trained at art schools in Reutte and Munich, he earned early recognition through contributions to magazines such as Simplicissimus and exhibitions in Berlin, establishing himself within avant-garde circles that included artists like Paul Klee and Franz Marc.

His output favored India-ink drawings, watercolors and lithographs, often arranged in thematic series with strong symbolic charge. He illustrated classics by Poe, E. T. A. Hoffmann and Dostoevsky, and had a visual influence on expressionist cinema: scenes in films such as Faust and Nosferatu echo his compositions.

In addition to his graphic work, Kubin wrote literary pieces, the best known of which is Die Andere Seite (1909) — a dystopia with a claustrophobic atmosphere that stands among landmarks of German-language fantastic literature. He lived in seclusion in a castle at Zwickledt from 1906 until his death, and despite Nazi persecution that labeled his art “degenerate,” he later received official honors in Austria.

His legacy endures at the intersection of image and literature, influencing movements such as Surrealism and later artists drawn to his dramatic use of light and symbolism.
