About

Alfred Bernhard Nobel was a Swedish chemist, engineer, inventor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist whose industrial and scientific work had a global impact. Holder of 355 patents, he is best known for inventing dynamite, patented in 1867, which made the use of nitroglycerin safer and boosted sectors such as mining and infrastructure. He also worked in the arms industry throughout his life, developing plants and equipment and expanding family businesses, including Bofors, which he turned into an important arms manufacturer.

In addition to technical production and innovation, Nobel was a polyglot entrepreneur who combined research and business, filing his first patent at age 24. After reading an obituary that criticized him as an encourager of war, he decided to leave the bulk of his fortune to establish the Prize that now bears his name, intended to recognize significant contributions to humanity. Nobel’s scientific and business legacy survives in institutions and names, and the element nobelium was named in his honor.
