About

Allan Bloom was an American philosopher, classicist and university professor, known for advocating an education centered on the Great Books and for his critique of contemporary higher education in the United States. Trained in the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago, Bloom translated and commented on classical works, including a translation of Plato’s Republic intended for serious readers, and prepared editions and readings of Rousseau and Swift.

Over the course of his career he taught at institutions such as Yale, Cornell, the University of Toronto, the École Normale Supérieure and the University of Chicago, where he influenced generations of students and thinkers. His most publicly impactful work was The Closing of the American Mind (1987), a best-seller that provoked broad debate about cultural relativism, academic curricula and the mission of the university.

He appeared in the media as a conservative intellectual, a label he contested, asserting that he defended the life of the mind. He also published collections of essays and, posthumously, Love and Friendship. His figure also inspired literature: Saul Bellow based the central character of Ravelstein on Bloom.
