About

Aloha Wanderwell, born Idris Galcia Welsh, was a Canadian explorer whose career encompassed auto racing, documentary filmmaking and aviation. She became famous between 1922 and 1927 for circumnavigating the globe behind the wheel of a Ford Model T, visiting dozens of countries and recording cultures and landscapes that were little known at the time. Her expeditions were filmed and preserved by institutions such as the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian, helping to safeguard rare visual records — including the first cinematic documentation of the Bororo people in Brazil.

Throughout her life Aloha worked as a driver, translator, filmmaker and touring lecturer, funding part of her travels through public screenings of the films and by securing partial sponsorships. She learned to fly seaplanes and continued to combine exploration with audiovisual production on later expeditions, maintaining a public presence in the 1930s and 1940s.

Her work influenced popular knowledge of remote regions and the history of travel documentary, making her an iconic interwar figure. She published the memoir Call to Adventure! (1939) and left a body of images and accounts that continue to inform studies of exploration, ethnography and travel cinema.
