About

Mātā Amritanandamayī Devi, known as Amma, is an Indian Hindu spiritual leader and humanitarian internationally known for her practice of embracing devotees as a gesture of blessing and comfort. From Kerala, she became notable in her youth for intense devotion and charitable activity; she formally founded the Mata Amritanandamayi Mission in 1981 and developed Amritapuri, a large center that houses thousands of residents and visitors.

Amma expanded her work into large-scale social projects through the Embracing the World network, focused on food, housing, education, and health. According to the organization, her initiatives have benefited millions of people and involved significant donations, including disaster relief after the tsunami and Hurricane Katrina.

Beyond social work, Amma founded and serves as chancellor of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, a private university with multiple campuses in India. She has participated in interreligious forums and received international awards and recognition for her efforts toward peace and interfaith dialogue.

Controversies have been reported by former associates regarding the conduct of the leader and the organization; the institution rejects these allegations. Her public legacy combines spiritual leadership, management of a broad philanthropic network, and participation in global forums for religious dialogue.
