About

Anatole France, the pen name of Jacques Anatole François Thibault, was one of the leading French writers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A novelist, short‑story writer, poet and essayist, he was noted for stylistic elegance, refined irony and a humanist sympathy that pervades his work. He became a member of the Académie française and his work received wide critical and popular recognition.

Among his best‑known books are Le Crime de Sylvestre Bonnard, Le Lys rouge, Les Opinions de Jérôme Coignard and L’Île des Pingouins, as well as socially engaged novels such as Les dieux ont soif. His output also includes biographies and historical narratives, such as Vie de Jeanne d’Arc, showing an interest both in moral comedy and in political and cultural themes.

In 1921 he received the Nobel Prize in Literature “in recognition of his brilliant literary achievements,” an honor that consolidated his international reputation. Anatole France’s legacy remains linked to classical French literature and to the use of irony and erudition to interrogate social and moral values.
