About
Angus James Bruce Ogilvy was a British businessman best known for his marriage to Princess Alexandra of Kent, a member of the British royal family. Born into the aristocracy—the son of the 12th Earl of Airlie and the grandson of figures connected to the court—Ogilvy remained closely linked to royal circles throughout his life, a connection reflected in the offices and honours he received.
He and Princess Alexandra married at Westminster Abbey in 1963, a ceremony attended by members of the royal family and broadcast internationally. Despite offers of royal appointments, Ogilvy chose not to accept titles or official residences, preferring to rent Thatched House Lodge in Richmond, where he lived with his wife.
A businessman by profession, his public life combined private commercial activity with ceremonial roles; in recognition of his service he was appointed a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1988 and became a Privy Counsellor in 1997. He left two children and is remembered for his close association with the monarchy and for maintaining a discreet approach to public life.
