About

Annelies Marie Frank was a German Jewish teenager, a victim of the Holocaust. She became one of the most discussed figures in history after the posthumous publication of Diário de Anne Frank (1947), in which she documented her experiences while living in hidden rooms of a company during the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II. Since then, she has been referred to as a "symbol of the struggle against prejudice" and her story has served as the basis for several stage plays and films over the years. In 1999, she was named one of the most important people of the 20th century in a list compiled by Time magazine.

In May 1940, after the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands, persecutions against Jews gradually increased, and laws were enacted that barred them from frequenting various establishments. Two years later, Anne's family decided to hide in secret rooms. On 4 August 1944, the group was mysteriously betrayed and the hiding place's location was revealed to the Gestapo, resulting in their transfer to various concentration camps.

In 1960, the Casa de Anne Frank museum was opened, a tourist site that has attracted more than 1.2 million visitors annually.
