About
Anni Albers was one of the most important textile artists of the 20th century, trained and later a teacher at the Bauhaus, where she participated in the dialogue between traditional craft and modern design. Her practice combined hand-weaving techniques and material experimentation — including cellophane and chenille — to produce both functional and conceptual textiles, among them reflective and acoustic panels commissioned by educational institutions.
A refugee from Nazi Germany in 1933, she moved to the United States with her husband Josef Albers and taught at Black Mountain College, becoming an influence for generations of the Fiber Art movement. Her work moved between utilitarian and artistic aims, with a continued emphasis on formal planning, tactile sensitivity, and the idea of “art for everyone.”
From 1951 she maintained a long collaboration with the textile firm Knoll, producing designs that remained in production for decades — one of the best known is the Eclat pattern. Over her career she received significant recognition, entered design history through exhibitions at institutions such as MoMA (1949), and earned awards from the American Institute of Architects and the American Crafts Council.
