About

Antonio Irineo Villarreal González was a journalist, politician and revolutionary Mexican military figure initially associated with the Mexican Liberal Party (PLM). Exiled in the United States, he worked as editor and organizer of the weekly Regeneración, helping to rebuild the PLM’s structure and to spread its platform among workers and opponents of the Porfirio regime.

Involved in clandestine actions and in organizing revolutionary cells along the border, Villarreal was arrested several times by U.S. and Mexican authorities, escaped deportation and lived on the run alongside PLM leaders. With the outbreak of the Mexican Revolution he left the PLM to support Francisco Madero and joined the constitutionalist forces against Victoriano Huerta.

During the revolutionary conflict he even held the state government of Nuevo León and, in the post-revolutionary period, served as Minister of Agriculture in Álvaro Obregón’s government. His career combined journalistic activism, political action and military participation, marking him as an active figure in Mexico’s struggles and political transformations in the first quarter of the twentieth century.
