About

Archduke of the House of Habsburg, Wilhelm Franz Karl was noted as a military officer and religious figure in the 19th‑century Austrian Empire. A son of Charles, Duke of Teschen, and a grandson of Emperor Leopold II, he graduated in political science from the University of Vienna and pursued a career in the Austrian Army, where he commanded the artillery during the 1866 war and was wounded at the Battle of Königgrätz. In recognition of his service he reached the rank of Feldzeugmeister in 1867 and served as governor of the Federal Fortress of Mainz.

In 1863 he became Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights, a position he held until his death, combining military duties with religious responsibilities. Known for living as a Catholic religious brother, he never married and left no descendants.

He died in 1894 after a fall from a horse in Weikersdorf, an accident attributed to a cerebral concussion. Wilhelm Franz’s life reflects the intersection of dynasty, military service, and religious commitment during a period of transition in Austrian imperial power.
