About

Aristide Maillol was a French artist whose career spanned painting, tapestry, printmaking and, above all, sculpture. Trained in Paris, he began as a painter and in the revived craft of tapestry, but from his forties he concentrated on sculpture, which crystallized his international reputation. His mature work favors the female body rendered with a classical emphasis, stable forms and a monumental serenity.

His rejection of the romantic narrative and the exaggerated dynamism then dominant brought Maillol closer to an aesthetic of formal purity that influenced later generations — among them Picasso, Matisse and Henry Moore — and helped clear the way for twentieth-century figurative simplification. He received important public commissions, such as the monument to Cézanne (1912) and several memorials after the First World War.

A significant part of his output is preserved in museums founded on or inspired by his legacy in Paris and in Banyuls-sur-Mer, his place of origin and burial. During and after the Second World War several of his works were subject to looting and recovery, an episode that forms part of the history of their circulation and conservation. Maillol remains a reference for formal rigor and for his lasting influence on modern sculpture.
