About
Arnaud de Rosnay was a photographer, adventurer and pioneer of board sports in the second half of the 20th century. Known in the fashion world for his collaborations with magazines such as Vogue and for having worked as an assistant to Richard Avedon, he also gained recognition for photo reports on mines and collections of gemstones that reinforced his standing as a photojournalist.
At the same time, de Rosnay became a central figure in the spread of surfing and power sailing in France, promoting competitions and introducing technical innovations. He invented the “speed sail” in 1977 and was one of the forerunners of kitesurfing by adapting a parafoil system for crossings; in 1981 he organized the first windsurfing speed event in Hawaii, drawing international competitors and sponsors.
His solo expeditions and bold crossings — including routes in the Arctic, the Pacific and the Sahel — defined his career and his public image as a man of challenge. The notoriety of his feats, sometimes controversial, helped popularize sailing and speed surfing. He disappeared in 1984 during a crossing of the Taiwan Strait, leaving a legacy as an innovator and promoter of extreme watersports.
