Babe Dimancheff

About

Boris Stephan “Babe” Dimancheff was an American football player and coach whose professional career spanned from the 1940s to the 1970s. As a halfback he played in the NFL for the Boston Yanks, Chicago Cardinals and Chicago Bears, helping the Cardinals win the 1947 championship and leading the franchise in kickoff return statistics. His college career included time at Butler and Purdue, where he served as captain, was an All‑American in 1944 and played a key role in Purdue’s undefeated 1943 campaign that captured the Big Ten title.

After ending his playing career, Dimancheff moved into coaching and front‑office roles. He was a backfield coach at colleges including Butler, Purdue and Wake Forest, served on NFL coaching staffs — among them the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Dallas Cowboys (as the franchise’s first backfield coach) and the Chicago Bears — and held player personnel director positions. He also worked as a coach and executive in alternative leagues, including the United/Continental Football League and the World Football League.

His legacy combines on‑field achievement, with collegiate honors and a professional title, and a long behind‑the‑scenes career that helped shape team rosters and players’ careers over decades.
