About

Bashar Hafez al-Assad is a Syrian politician who led the Syrian Arab Republic for more than two decades until he was overthrown in 2024 and fled into exile. Trained as a medical doctor with a specialty in ophthalmology, Assad was groomed as his father Hafez al‑Assad’s successor and established himself as head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces after taking power in 2000.

His government began amid expectations of reform but soon became defined by the maintenance of an authoritarian regime: concentration of power, repression of dissidents, and control over political institutions. Assad’s administration faced strong domestic opposition and international sanctions, especially after the suppression of the 2011 protests that sparked a prolonged civil war.

The conflict, which lasted nearly fourteen years, caused enormous loss of life and destruction, and forces loyal to his government were repeatedly accused of serious human rights violations and war crimes. Assad denied those allegations, blaming the violence on conspiracies and external interventions.

His political career left a deeply divisive legacy: for critics, he became the embodiment of a police state and authoritarian practices; for supporters, a defender of national sovereignty amid a complex war.
