Belford Hendricks

About

Belford Cabell Hendricks was an American composer, pianist, arranger, conductor and record producer, known for his versatility and for collaborating with leading figures in the arts. He became a central figure in the 1950s and 1960s by co-writing soft-R&B hits—often in partnership with Clyde Otis and Brook Benton—and by creating arrangements that moved between big band, blues, R&B, pop and early soul music.

His studio work produced hundreds of compositions and arrangements: he made decisive contributions to hits such as "Looking Back" and "It's Just a Matter of Time" and wrote nearly 100 arrangements for Dinah Washington, in addition to prolific partnerships with Sarah Vaughan, Nat King Cole, Brook Benton and others. He was also responsible for shaping sounds that became hits on the pop, R&B and country charts.

Trained in music and science, he studied composition and arranging methods in New York, which enabled him to adapt to diverse styles and to orchestrate voices and instrumentation with technical refinement. His legacy is that of an arranger and songwriter whose work helped define postwar American popular sound, influencing performers and the recording industry.
