About

Beth Heiden is an American athlete whose multi‑disciplinary career made her notable in the 1970s and 1980s. Initially known for speed skating, she established herself by winning the World Allround Championship in 1979 and earning the bronze medal in the 3,000 m at the Lake Placid Olympics (1980), a performance affected by an ankle injury.

Alongside her skating, Heiden distinguished herself in cycling: in 1980 she won the United States road championship and claimed national time trial titles, was a junior world champion, and was later honored by USA Cycling with induction into the Hall of Fame in 2013.

While a student at the University of Vermont, she successfully switched to cross‑country skiing, becoming an NCAA champion and All‑American in her first season in the sport.

Her career is remembered for the rarity of high-level achievements across three distinct sports—speed skating, cycling, and skiing—and for her legacy of athletic versatility within American sport.
