Bill Ash

About

Bill Ash (William Franklin Ash) was a writer, broadcaster and Marxist activist born in the United States who became a British citizen. His public life was shaped by his wartime service in the air during World War II and by vigorous political and literary activity after the war. As a fighter pilot with the RAF and the Royal Canadian Air Force he flew Spitfires, was shot down over France, joined resistance networks and endured long detention in several prisoner-of-war camps, becoming noted for escape attempts and for active roles on evasion committees; for these actions he was awarded an MBE in 1946. After the war he studied at Oxford and joined the BBC, serving as a representative in India and later working as a reader and literary manager, where he grew close to socialist currents influenced by leaders such as Nehru. The author of novels and essays — including Choice of Arms and Marxist Morality — he co-founded the Communist Party of Britain (Marxist–Leninist) and served as president of the Writers' Guild of Great Britain, also mentoring young writers and contributing to radio drama with works on writing for radio. His career combined exceptional military experience, committed left‑wing politics and sustained literary and editorial output.
