About

William Jennings Bryan "Billy" Herman was a prominent second baseman and coach in American professional baseball during the 1930s and 1940s. Known for outstanding defense and consistent hitting, Herman finished his career with a .304 batting average and 2,345 hits, including 486 doubles; those figures supported his reputation as one of the National League’s finest defensive second basemen.

As a player he took part in four World Series (1932, 1935, 1938 and 1941), though he did not win a championship; he nevertheless led various defensive statistics for second basemen and holds league records for the position. His playing career was interrupted by World War II, when he served in the Navy, after which he returned to the professional circuit.

After ending his playing career, Herman had a long tenure as a coach and manager, with stints at the Pirates, Dodgers, Braves and Red Sox, and served on coaching staffs of National League championship teams. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1975, a recognition of his lasting impact on the American game.
