About

Glenn Edward “Bo” Schembechler Jr. was a central figure in American college football as a player, coach, and athletic administrator. A graduate of Miami University, where he encountered influential coaches such as Sid Gillman and Woody Hayes, Schembechler built his career as an assistant at several institutions before taking on head positions.

His legacy was shaped mainly at the University of Michigan, where he served as head coach from 1969 to 1989. Over 21 seasons he led the Wolverines to 194 wins, 48 losses, and 5 ties, winning or sharing 13 Big Ten titles and keeping the program consistently highly ranked, with 16 final top-ten placements in the major polls.

Earlier he had led Miami University (1963–1968), where he won the Mid-American Conference twice. After leaving coaching he became Michigan’s athletic director and later served as president of the professional baseball team the Detroit Tigers. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1993.

Schembechler’s story includes the famed rivalry with Woody Hayes—the so-called “Ten-Year War”—which defined an era of college football. In recent years his public image has been the subject of controversy related to administrative omissions in cases of abuse involving third parties.
