About

Sir Robert “Bobby” Charlton was one of England’s greatest footballers of the 20th century, an icon for Manchester United and the England national team. Playing as an attacking midfielder and left winger, he stood out for his vision, finishing, and powerful shots from medium and long range, as well as for his sportsmanship and dribbling.

A survivor of the 1958 Munich air disaster, Charlton became a key part of United’s rebuild under Matt Busby, forming the famed trio with Denis Law and George Best. With the club he won domestic titles in the 1960s and was decisive in the campaign that brought United the European Cup in 1968, scoring in the final.

For England he played a crucial role in the 1966 World Cup triumph, scoring decisive goals in the semifinal against Portugal. That same year he won the Ballon d’Or as Europe’s best player. After leaving United in 1973 he had spells with Preston and Waterford and a short spell as a manager.

His legacy crosses generations: a touchstone for technique, leadership and fair play, with records and formal honors—including his knighthood—cementing him as a central figure in the history of English and world football.
