About

Bobby Layne was an American professional quarterback who rose to prominence in the 1940s and 1950s. A graduate of Texas, where he was a four-time All-Southwest Conference selection and a consensus All-American, Layne set school records and delivered decisive performances in college classics—especially the Cotton Bowl—and ranks among the program’s most important figures.

In the NFL he had a 15-season career: drafted in 1948, he spent time in Chicago and New York before reaching his peak with the Detroit Lions (1950–1958), later finishing his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers (1958–1962). His professional achievements led to election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame (1967) and the College Football Hall of Fame (1968). The No. 22 he wore was retired by both the Longhorns and the Lions.

Beyond his on-field accomplishments, Layne is remembered for his role on winning teams and for influencing the development of the game in the postwar era, when professional football was gaining broader national prominence. His legacy endures in college records and in the NFL’s memory as one of the influential quarterbacks of his generation.
