About

C. K. Williams was an American poet, critic, and translator whose work held a prominent place in contemporary United States poetry. Known for long lines and a conversational tone, he addressed private and collective themes with a mix of skeptical intelligence and sincere emotional intensity. He became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2003.

Over his career he received the major literary awards: Flesh and Blood won the National Book Critics Circle Award (1987); Repair earned him the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry (2000) among other honors; and The Singing won the National Book Award (2003). His output also includes collections, essays, plays, children’s works, and translations of Greek tragedies.

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, he lived between the U.S. and France and taught creative writing at several universities, including Princeton. His poetic practice—marked by daily discipline and a wide narrative reach—influenced generations of writers and readers.

He died in 2015, leaving a body of work gathered in volumes such as Poems 1963–1983 and Collected Poems (2006); posthumously Falling Ill (2017) was published, closing a career recognized by critics and the public.
