About

Calvin Coolidge was a Republican politician and lawyer who became the 30th President of the United States, serving from 1923 to 1929. Originally from Vermont, he built his career in Massachusetts, where he rose to prominence as governor — his firm handling of the Boston Police Strike (1919) brought him national attention and earned him a reputation as a resolute decision‑maker. He became president after succeeding Warren G. Harding upon Harding’s death and was re‑elected in 1924.

In office, Coolidge established a conservative stance favoring minimal state intervention in the economy, advocating spending cuts and free‑market policies that reflected the entrepreneurial spirit and aspirations of the middle class of the era. He worked to restore public confidence after the scandals of the previous administration and left office with considerable popularity.

Historical assessments of his administration are divided: some historians praise his restraint and the promotion of the 1920s prosperity, while others criticize the laissez‑faire approach and lack of economic regulation, arguing that his policies may have contributed to later vulnerabilities. His legacy remains a subject of academic debate.
