About

Carole Lombard was an American actress whose career was established in the screwball comedies of the 1930s. Discovered as a child in silent films, she overcame an accident that left her with a facial scar and rebuilt her career by working in Mack Sennett comedies and, later, in sound features. Her artistic hallmarks were comic timing and irreverent energy, qualities that made her sought after by Paramount.

Her major breakthrough came with Twentieth Century (1934), directed by Howard Hawks, which launched her as a leading player in sophisticated comedies. She then built popular partnerships—most notably with Fred MacMurray—and delivered memorable performances in films such as My Man Godfrey (1936), which earned her an Academy Award nomination, and Nothing Sacred (1937).

Married to Clark Gable, Lombard became a prominent public figure. In her final years she sought more serious roles without abandoning comedy entirely; her last films include Mr. & Mrs. Smith (1941) and To Be or Not to Be (1942). She died prematurely in 1942 in a plane crash while taking part in war bond promotion activities, leaving a legacy as one of the defining voices of classic American comedy.
