About

Caryl Whittier Chessman was an American criminal whose notoriety grew in the 1950s after his arrest for a series of robberies, kidnappings and rapes that took place in January 1948 in Greater Los Angeles. Identified by victims as a participant in the crimes attributed to the so-called "Red Light Bandit," Chessman was convicted on 17 of 18 counts and sentenced to death. His initial defense included allegations of mistreatment during interrogation and procedural controversies that marked the course of the case.

While incarcerated, Chessman studied law and chose to represent himself in part of the proceedings, and he wrote several autobiographical works and a novel, which saw wide circulation and brought international attention to his case. His writings—published while he served his sentence—sparked public debate and renewed discussions about the penal system and capital punishment in California.

Executed in the gas chamber on May 2, 1960, Chessman left an ambiguous legacy: to some he was a criminal convicted of serious offenses; to others he became a symbolic figure in debates over due process and the application of the death penalty. Documents and collections related to his case are preserved in public archives.
