About

Charles de Morny was an influential French public figure and businessman of the 19th century, prominent during the July Monarchy, the Second Republic and the Second Empire. Born into a complex family background, he became a deputy for Puy-de-Dôme, served as Minister of the Interior during the events surrounding the coup of 2 December 1851, and later presided over the Corps Législatif. His political activity placed him at the center of the maneuvers that consolidated the power of his half-brother, Napoleon III, and he remained a trusted adviser and administrator.

Beyond politics, Morny was a major entrepreneur and real estate speculator: he invested in the sugar industry, founded the Grand Central Railway Company, and took part in urban development projects around Paris and on the Norman coast. He is also credited with creating Le Vésinet and developing Deauville, initiatives that combined private interests with an urban vision.

A salon host and cultural patron, he financed artists and kept ties with figures such as Offenbach and Daudet, who portrayed him in literature. For brief periods he served in diplomatic posts, including ambassador to Saint Petersburg, and cultivated connections within European high diplomacy. His legacy mixes political power, entrepreneurial initiative and social influence in Second Empire France.
