About

Charles Gondouin was a versatile French athlete active in the first decades of the 20th century, best known for his achievements in rugby and related athletic disciplines. He played for Racing Club de France as both fly-half and scrum-half, was selected for the French national team, and was a starter on the side that won the Olympic gold medal in the rugby tournament of 1900. His play on the field and appearances in important finals made him a notable figure in the national sporting scene of the Belle Époque.

Beyond rugby, Gondouin excelled in other sports: he won an Olympic silver medal in the tug of war team event (1900) and became French champion in the hurdling jump in 1900. He also showed aptitude in golf and contributed in writing to works on sport, supplying technical chapters and material for specialized publications over subsequent decades.

Off the field, he officiated high-level matches before and after World War I and served as president of the Paris City Committee after 1919. He worked as a sports journalist covering events in the 1920s and 1930s, leaving a legacy as an athlete, administrator, and author in French sport.
