About

Charles Kuralt was an American journalist and author whose career spanned television, radio and print. He became known for his work at CBS, where he began as a writer and, at 25, became the network’s youngest correspondent. He covered major global events — including the Vietnam War and uprisings in Africa — and served as chief correspondent for Latin America and later for the U.S. West Coast.

His name became widely recognized through human-interest series and segments: the “On the Road” pieces on the news program with Walter Cronkite and, later, as the inaugural host of the Sunday program CBS News Sunday Morning, a position he held for fifteen years. Those works earned him major awards, including multiple Peabodys and an Emmy, and led to recognition in the Television Hall of Fame.

Kuralt also published books and produced documentaries, such as the account of an Arctic expedition, To the Top of the World. His approach favored profiles and local stories that highlighted the individuality of communities and ordinary people, and he influenced how television journalism can blend reporting with literary narrative.
