About

Charles Michel is a Belgian politician whose career combines national executive roles with European leadership. A member of the Mouvement Réformateur (MR), he emerged early in regional and federal politics, serving as a minister and becoming president of his party in 2011. In 2014 he led the MR into the federal elections and guided the negotiations that placed him at the head of a coalition government, taking office as prime minister at 38—the youngest since 1841.

In the federal government, Michel pursued a liberal course on economic and social issues: he implemented a “tax shift” to raise net incomes, supported labor and pension reforms, and introduced budget cuts in culture, science and justice—choices that sparked debate about their institutional effects and social cohesion. His term also faced a political crisis in 2018 over the Global Compact for Migration, which caused the coalition to collapse and left him serving in a caretaker capacity.

In 2019 he was elected President of the European Council, a position he held until 2024, representing the European Union at high-level forums and coordinating the bloc’s political priorities. His path shows a move from national prominence to European visibility, with a legacy tied to promoting liberal reforms in Belgium and to his work within EU institutions.
